Food Delivery & Food Waste Reduction App
Developed a mobile application that combines on-demand food delivery with a food waste reduction platform. The solution connects customers with restaurants, cafés, bakeries, grocery stores, and other food businesses, allowing them to order regular meals or purchase surplus food at discounted prices before it goes to waste.
The application was designed to provide a convenient food ordering experience while helping local businesses reduce unsold inventory, recover part of the cost of surplus products, and contribute to more sustainable food consumption.
Role: iOS Developer
Key Responsibilities:
• Developed and maintained the native iOS application, focusing on performance, scalability, stability, and an intuitive user experience.
• Implemented restaurant and store discovery features, allowing users to browse nearby businesses, explore available meals and surplus food offers, and quickly find discounted products.
• Built detailed restaurant and product screens containing descriptions, pricing, availability, pickup or delivery options, and other relevant information.
• Developed a complete shopping cart and checkout flow, including product selection, quantity management, order confirmation, delivery or pickup preferences, and payment processing.
• Integrated location-based functionality and maps to help users discover nearby restaurants, stores, and available food offers based on their current location.
• Implemented food delivery functionality, including order placement, order status updates, estimated preparation and delivery times, and order history.
• Developed a dedicated surplus food marketplace where businesses can publish unsold meals and products at reduced prices instead of discarding them at the end of the day.
• Implemented real-time availability management to ensure users could see current offers and avoid ordering products that were already sold out or no longer available.
• Built push notification functionality to inform users about order updates, new nearby offers, limited-time discounts, pickup reminders, and changes in delivery status.
• Integrated secure authentication and user account functionality, including registration, login, profile management, saved addresses, preferences, and previous orders.
• Worked with REST APIs and backend services to synchronize restaurants, menus, products, orders, user accounts, delivery information, and surplus food availability.
• Implemented asynchronous data loading, caching, and error handling to maintain a responsive user experience even with unstable or slow network connections.
• Developed reusable UI components and maintained a modular application architecture to simplify future development and feature expansion.
• Optimized application performance, loading times, memory usage, and responsiveness across different iPhone models and supported iOS versions.
• Worked closely with backend developers, UI/UX designers, product managers, and QA engineers throughout the development lifecycle.
• Participated in testing, debugging, code reviews, App Store release preparation, and post-release maintenance.
Food Waste Reduction Features:
A key part of the application was reducing unnecessary food waste. Restaurants and stores could list surplus meals or products that remained available near the end of the business day and offer them at discounted prices.
Users could discover these offers based on location, price, availability, and pickup time. This created additional value for both sides: customers received quality food at lower prices, while businesses could generate additional revenue from products that might otherwise have been discarded.
The platform also encouraged more sustainable consumption by making food waste reduction part of the everyday food ordering experience.
Result:
Delivered a scalable and user-friendly iOS solution combining traditional food delivery with a sustainability-focused surplus food marketplace. The application simplified ordering and pickup for customers, provided businesses with an additional channel for selling excess inventory, and helped reduce food waste through real-time discounted offers.
